The Tequila Matadors

Today we share with you two drinks with the same name, each distinctly different from each other and each worthy of exploring.  The Tequila Matador Cocktail first appeared in the 1937 Café Royal Cocktail Book as a combination of Tequila, Dry Vermouth and Orange Curacao.  In 1972 another rendition of the drink was offered in Trader Vic’s Bartender’s Guide as a combination of Tequila, Pineapple Juice and Lime.  The first rendition drinks like a Tequila Martini while the latter has a tropical, fruity vibe.  Lost in time, these classic offerings are as different as day and night but each having its own charms in the glass.  Looking for a strong drink, try the early version and should you want something fruity and easy drinking, Trader Vic’s version is for you.

Tequila Matador (Café Royal 1937 version)

In a shaker glass filled with ice add:

  • 1 Ounce Blanco Tequila
  • 1 Ounce Dry Vermouth
  • 1 Ounce Orange Curacao

Shake and strain into a stemmed cocktail glass (Nick & Nora style).  Garnish with a twist of lemon.

Tequila Matador (Trader Vic’s 1972 version)

In a shaker glass filled with shaved ice add:

  • 1 Ounce Blanco Tequila
  • 2 Ounces Pineapple Juice
  • ¾ Ounce Fresh Squeezed Lime Juice

Shake and strain into a chilled champagne flute.  Garnish with a lime wedge or pineapple.
