Let’s talk red blends…a category that offers winemakers carte blanche to craft up something in their vision from a mixed bag of grape varieties.  Some have become wildly successful, not from great winemaking, rather very clever marketing.  Others have gone on to craft something delicious but lack the production to have an over-the-top marketing plan.  Our wine today is a delicious red blend, brimming with flavor yet priced for everyday satisfaction.

Gen 5 is our label here and it comes from the Langhe Family.  Quite literally in their fifth generation (talk about on the nose) of grape growing & vineyard managing on their estate property in Lodi.  This family is serious about their land.  They’re certified ‘green’ with a sustainable approach to winegrowing that exceeds just about every other producer making wines in this price point.  The principle here is simple – the highest quality grapes make the highest quality wine.

Their Ancestral Red Blend is a combination of Cabernet, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, Malbec and some Merlot thrown in for good measure.  The rich, robust flavors of these gregarious varietals is tempered with a brief stint in oak barrel, adding polish & depth to this tasty red.  Total production here is just about 5,000 cases – by comparison, the most popular red blend brands will do that kind of volume in a day.  Drink this wine because it’s delicious and priced right.  Smile with every pour because it’s a small Family project that overachieves.
