The evolution of the Martini has come full circle. Originally the Martini morphed from the Martinez cocktail, comprised of gin and sweet vermouth. In time the sweet went to dry. The Dry Martini as we know it today is most often attributed to British Field Marsh Bernard Montgomery who during WW2 had his martinis mixed to the same ratio as his battle strategy, 15:1 outnumbering the enemy. In its purest form the Dry Martini is comprised of a spirit, lightly embellished, nudged by a tease of vermouth. It is also a strong drink that can take the feet out from under the most seasoned imbiber.
There was a time when all Martinis were wet. In simplest terms the proportions of gin (or vodka) to vermouth were either 50/50 or pretty darned close. This change in measures creates a significantly different drink. As contemporary drinking trends change and some look to reduce the high proof in their cocktails, in comes the revival of the Wet Martini, A.K.A. the Fitty-Fitty (shout out to The Pegu Club for its role in the revival). This equally measured drink is lower in proof and also allows the character of the vermouth to shine. Now when it comes to Martinis, wet or dry, the quality of the ingredients is paramount. Below we offer you our branded take on the Fitty-Fitty and suggest you try it and tinker with the brands you prefer to make the drink your own.
