Castello di Volpaia Chianti Classico 2020

Many of you have heard us tout the incredible quality of Castello di Volpaia in Chianti Classico.  We’ve promoted them as long as any other to brand and to be frank, they outshine the “leading” label whose name rhymes with Moschino.  Today we’re excited to offer you the newest vintage of this tremendous house … the 2020 Castello di Volapaia Chianti Classico.  A wine privy to great reviews every release, yet the praise on this vintage is on an entirely different level.

To be fair, everyone should have made excellent Chianti Classico in a vintage like 2020 – all indicators suggest it’s the best harvest since 2016.  So when we first sampled Volpaia’s we were prepared for a heightened experience – and when the liquid hit our lips, we were overwhelmed by the immense quality of this vintage.  In our due diligence of finding reviews from top critics, we found both Wine Spectator and James Suckling had given their blessings – but we also came across one Luca Gardini who dropped a “100” spot on this wine.  That’s right, the perfect Chianti Classico.

Luca Gardini was once a member of Wine Spectators staff and has subsequently left to start his own brand of wine journalism.  He’s certainly an accomplished taster with a myriad of accolades, including but not limited to Best Sommelier of Italy, Best Sommelier of Europe and Best Sommelier of the World.  Not too shabby.   He boasted, "A ‘blessed’ blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Syrah, nose with notes of red currant, rhubarb and licorice, with a finish of mint. The mouthfeel is juicy, dense and crisp, rich in salty-savory tannins and very long persistence. Return of red berries and rhubarb sensations on the finish. - 100 Points

The Bottle Pros thoroughly enjoyed the 2020 Castello di Volpaia Chianti Classico and there isn’t a Sangiovese loving soul out there who would not.  Bring home a bottle and enjoy with dishes draped in red sauce, your favorite savories or a well done meatball!
