Esprit de Pavie 2016

From the 98 point vintage on the Right Bank of Bordeaux

From a five time 100 point winemaker

The estate’s first label commands $400, enjoy Esprit on sale for $30

Serious Pedigree + Amazing Vintage .. this is a no brainer

Bordeaux has long been revered as the birthplace of modern wine trade.  Running the vineyards and picturesque Chateaux are very serious business people who have shaped the rest of the wine world’s better business practices.  Today’s wine is a refreshing look at how a top producer of Grand Cru Classe Bordeaux is offering remarkable value without compromise.

A Parisian turned vintner, Gerard Perse was an outsider entering the world of Cru Classe on the right bank of Bordeaux.  He started with the acquisition of Chateau Monbousquet ($75 for 2016) in 1993, followed swiftly by snatching up Chateau Pavie ($400 for 2016) just five years later.  In short order, he came to own two iconic properties and while conventional wisdom would lead one to “let the dust settle” – Gerard is always looking ahead.  What else would you expect from a vigneron with five 100 Point (yes, perfect) wines on his resume?

He began working to expand vineyard holdings surrounding Pavie & Monbousquet and over the years was able to build on his estate.  Yet rather than incorporate his younger vines into the Grand Cru Classe bottlings he decided to craft a wine to introduce his style to the people.  Enter Esprit de Pavie – a stunning example of world-class Bordeaux, crafted from by the same genius winemaking and vineyard management yet at a price attainable by many.  Gerard’s says …

“I created Esprit de Pavie to share my passion with as many people as possible. I have always given the same care and attention in winemaking to Esprit de Pavie as Château Pavie and our other properties, to ensure each bottle's high-quality level.” – Gerard Perse

To put it lightly, we’ve long held Gerard’s work in high regard .. and prior to the 2016 Esprit de Pavie – we’ve never been able to sell his “affordable” bottlings due to lack of supply in Connecticut.  A few weeks ago we had a chance to taste the Esprit from what has become recognized as an outstanding vintage in 2016.  We were floored by this wine – and you will be too.  Revered wine critic Jeb Dunnuck said, “This total charmer has a sweet bouquet of black cherries, licorice, and spice to go with a mouthfilling, pure, balanced style on the palate that’s already delicious. It certainly has estate character and is ideal for enjoying over the coming decade or so. I’d happily drink bottles.”

Simply put, this is a treat for any casual wine enthusiasts all the way up to serious francophiles .. all for under $30 on sale.  Enjoy this remarkable Bordeaux with prime cuts seared to perfection or gourmet mac and cheese.
